Problems to Look For

Has your gas boiler stopped working? We’ve all been there, and there are a few common causes! To help you get to the root of the issue and get things back up and running as soon as possible, here are some of the most common boiler faults, along with when you should call one of our Gas Safe Registered heating engineers to come and take a look.

No power

No power, thanks to a tripped circuit breaker, is one of the most common causes of boilers not working, but far too many people never make the connection! Go and check your fuse box, and if any switches are tripped, reset them.

Low water pressure

Low water pressure can stop your boiler from functioning as it should. Look for any leaks and adjust the pressure valve if it needs it. If you are worried about anything that you find, remember that we are just a phone call away!

Thermostat problems

A thermostat that has been set incorrectly or has broken can lead to heating issues. Check the settings, and if they can be adjusted, do that. If the thermostat isn’t working at all, it will need to be replaced.

Trapped air

If air becomes trapped in your heating, it can actually stop your boiler from working properly. Luckily, it is really easy to fix. All you need to do is bleed your radiators to release any trapped air, and then you should be back up and running!

Frozen condensate pipe

This is one that we see a lot, and when we are called out and find that this is the cause, we tell our customers to keep an eye out for it every winter. When the temperature drops, the condensate pipe can freeze. The solution? Insulate the pipe or pour warm water on it to thaw it!

Problems with the pilot light

If the pilot light in your boiler won’t stay lit, this can be a sign of a wide range of issues. It is always best to give us a call if you are dealing with this, as we will quickly be able to identify what the root cause is.

The boiler is just getting old

The older a boiler is, the more likely it is that it will run into issues as time goes on. If your boiler is breaking down frequently, the time may have come to replace it. We will always tell you if this is the more cost-effective option.

What to do if you smell gas

Remember, if you can smell gas or think that you have a gas leak, you need to take emergency action. Call the Gas Emergency Services on 0800 111 999 right away, and then do the following:

  • Turn off your gas supply at the meter.
  • Open all your doors and windows to let any built-up gas out.
  • Do not switch any electricals on, and don’t turn any off either!
  • Put out all naked flames, and do not smoke or strike a match.
  • Open your doors manually instead of using electrical security entry phones or locks.
