How to Improve the Efficiency of Your Boiler

 Why Is It Important?

Access to hot water and heating in the home are essential elements for comfortable everyday living, making your boiler a crucial appliance. That’s why it’s important to take steps to maintain your boiler for optimum efficiency. An inefficient boiler will not only cost you comfort, but also money. Avoid increasing household energy bills and spending money out on broken down radiators with these tips to ensure optimum functionality and improve the efficiency of your boiler.

Service Your Boiler Annually

Just like your car, your boiler needs to be serviced regularly to keep it running smoothly for as long as possible. Aim to get a professional boiler service once a year; this will reduce the chances of a breakdown during the colder months. It can also detect whether there is anything wrong with your boiler that needs to be fixed before escalating into bigger issues. Bleed All Radiators

When air is trapped inside of radiators, it stops warm water from circulating around the radiator. This can mean your rooms take longer to heat up, and your central heating system may not be working efficiently. To assess whether your radiators need bleeding, check if the top of the radiator feels cooler than the bottom, as well as how long it takes to heat up and any flowing or clicking sounds. If it takes a while, you can feel cold spots, or there are unusual sounds, it is probably time to bleed your radiators. Your boiler works with your radiators, so if they are not working properly you will be paying money without gaining all the benefits. A simple maintenance task worth doing to keep your home warm and save money!

Insulate Your Pipes

Significantly reduce loss of heating to avoid your boiler having to work so hard by insulating your pipes. You can do this easily yourself by lagging them with foam tubes; a simple DIY job that will save you money in the long run and make your boiler more efficient.

Turn the Heating on Every Month

If your boiler is left inactive for an extended period of time, it may stop heating. Keep your heating active by turning it on for around 15 minutes every month throughout the year, or weekly throughout the warmer months. Whilst it may feel strange, doing this can help prevent problems like your boiler breaking down.

If your boiler is still not functioning efficiently, it may be time to upgrade your boiler. Older boilers can be expensive to run in comparison to newer, high efficiency boilers.
